Internship
Southern Crescent Equine Services is proud to offer a 1 year internship to 1 new veterinary student. The dates of the internship will be June 1, 2026 through June 7, 2027. Southern Crescent Equine Services is a full service general equine practice located in Newnan, GA. We currently have 5 veterinarians on staff and offer both ambulatory and haul in services.
Our case load is approximately 60% ambulatory and 40% haul-in. We maintain a small recipient mare herd that is used for embryo transfers as well as for learning opportunities for students. We offer stallion training and collection, mare management, embryo transfer as well as foal-out services and neonatal care through the spring and summer. We offer full dental services including routine performance floats, dental endoscopy and extractions. Throughout the year, we see a good balance of respiratory cases, preventative care treatment, general wellness exams, minor surgery, ophthalmology, and more. We perform gastroscopy and upper airway endoscopy in hospital. We have a strong lameness/performance case load and have digital x-ray, ultrasound and lameness locator available for diagnostics. We offer emergency services for Newnan, Georgia as well as the surrounding areas (approximately 45 min - 1 hour out in all directions).
Interns will assist with hospital, outpatient, and ambulatory services with direct and indirect supervision as experience, confidence, and abilities grow throughout the internship year. Interns will be responsible for in-patient cases and daily treatment updates for senior veterinarians. The intern will work directly with an associate veterinarian in the beginning of the internship and be given more primary case responsibility as confidence and clinical competence are achieved. They are exposed to a wide range of clinical cases and experiences and will be involved in every aspect of the practice as well as surgical procedures, intensive care case management, and emergency services. Intern will share emergency on call responsibility with senior veterinarians and will always have a backup to assist with cases.
The equine community in our area is alive and thriving. Our patients include back yard best friends and Olympians. We see a large variety of disciplines including 3 day eventing, hunter jumpers, endurance racing, barrel racing, working equitation, saddle seat and trail riding. There are several large parks with equestrian trails and events in our practice area in addition to a premier equestrian facility which hosts numerous FEI and USEF events throughout the year. We are also within 2-3 hrs of several surgical referral centers for cases requiring more intensive care.
We provide housing onsite to offer the maximum learning opportunities. The one room apartment is well furnished with two beds, a kitchen, and bathroom. Linens are provided. There are several grocery stores and restaurant options nearby. Additionally, there are several walking or running trails nearby.
Pre-requisites for application: Resume, letter of intent, veterinary school transcript, completion of National Board licensing by the end of the academic year, 3 letters of recommendation, and eligibility to drive a motor vehicle. An externship is strongly recommended. At minimum, an in-person interview is required.
Prior to beginning internship, applicant would be required to obtain Georgia veterinary license, DEA license, and be eligible for USDA accreditation in Georgia.
